Technical Operations Engineer

Job purpose

This is an excellent opportunity to join an expanding Technical Operations team for a globally diverse company providing SaaS email services for email security, business continuity, archiving and disaster recovery. We are looking for an experienced Red Hat / Centos Linux Engineer, experienced in managing medium to large scale infrastructure environments, who operates with a high sense of urgency to maintain a zero downtime environment.

The ideal candidate will be someone who possesses excellent problem solving skills, has a diverse set of technical skills in networking, programming, web applications and server hardware technology, specifically HP. The ideal candidate will also possess strong analytical skills and have a high attention to detail.

Primary duties and responsibilities

  • Adherence to and achievement of the Company’s Service Level Agreements
  • Working collaboratively with the Service Delivery on resolving technical issues and client escalations
  • Manage the monitoring and alerting of systems to detect failures and ensure automation through the development of auto recovery scripts in the SaaS environment. Experience with monitoring, automation and configuration tools like Opsview, Nagios, Spacewalk and Puppet.
  • Preparation, configuration and deployment of hardware into the production Grid
  • Learn all relevant aspects of current and new product rollouts to ensure ongoing improvement of product and technical knowledge
  • Participate in supporting global infrastructure software deployments
  • Management and routine maintenance of the Data Centres, including web and application servers, firewalls, and other networking devices
  • Work with other departments, such as Service Delivery, Pre-Sales etc, to expand knowledge and assist with technical issues where required

Person specification

Essential:

  • 5 years experience managing medium to large scale infrastructure environments
  • Educated to A level or equivalent in an IT related subject
  • Experience working in an environment where high availability demands after hours and weekend work as and when required

Technical Expertise:

  • Excellent knowledge of Centos, clustering technologies
  • Jboss / Java exposure
  • Demonstrable experience in Internet protocols, particularly SMTP, POP, HTTP & TCP/IP
  • Excellent knowledge of Centos and *nix based scripting technologies (bash, sed, awk, and others)
  • Excellent PostgreSQL DBA skillsExperience with monitoring, automation and configuration tools like Opsview, Nagios, Spacewalk and Puppet

Desirable:

  • Educated to degree standard in a computer related subject
  • Exposure to SaaS technologies and platforms would be advantageous
  • Technical Certifications in programming, Linux Engineering and Networking
  • Working practical knowledge of HP server hardware and storage
  • Experience in building and managing virtualised server farms
